Our St. Vasilios Community participated in the 29th annual Peabody International Festival. The weather was perfect which drew many people to our booth for a sampling of our parish's traditional, homemade Greek cuisine and pastries. In addition hundreds of people cheered as our own St. Vasilios Greek School Dancers performed front-and-center in Peabody Square.

Our parish held its annual Greek Picnic on Sunday, June 20, 2013 ar Winter Island in Salem, MA. The day began with the Divine Liturgy outdoors followed by food, fellowship and fun with many from our parish as well as the North Shore Community.

Late in the morning on Pascha the faithful gather once more for prayer with lighted candles. All sing the hymn, "Christ is Risen from the Dead". The people greet one another joyously, saying: "Christ is Risen", which is answered with, "Truly He is Risen". The Gospel according to John (20:19-25) is read in various languages.

The Resurrection service begins in complete darkness. The priest takes light from the vigil light and gives it to the faithful, who are holding candles. The Gospel reading for this service comes from Mark 16:1-8. After the Gospel reading the priest leads the congregation in chanting the hymn of the Resurrection: "Christ has Risen from the dead, by death trampling upon Death, and has bestowed life upon those in the tombs". The Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom is then officiated.

The Divine Liturgy held on the morning of Holy and Great Saturday is that of Saint Basil the Great. After the reading of the Epistle, the priest follows the custom of tossing of laurel, saying: "Arise, O God, and judge the earth: for Thou shall take all nations to Your inheritance".

On Holy Friday evening the Orthodox Church commemorates the burial of Christ and His descent into Hades. It is the day between the Crucifixion of our Lord and His glorious Resurrection.

The Vespers of Friday afternoon are a continuation of the Royal Hours. During this service, the removal of the Body of Christ from the Cross is commemorated with a sense of mourning. Once more, excerpts from the Old Testament are read together with hymns, and again the entire story is related, followed by the removal of Christ from the Cross and the wrapping of His body with a white sheet as did Joseph of Arimathea.

Through the Holy Thursday Evening service, we commemorate the sufferings of Christ: the mockery, the crown of thorns, the scourging, the nails, the thirst, the vinegar and gall, the cry of desolation, and all the Savior endured on the Cross.

On the afternoon or evening of Great and Holy Wednesday, the Sacrament or Mystery of Holy Unction is conducted in Orthodox parishes. The Sacrament of Holy Unction is offered for the healing of soul and body and for forgiveness of sins. At the conclusion of the service of the Sacrament, the body is anointed with oil, and the grace of God, which heals infirmities of soul and body, is called down upon each person.

The Church observes a special service known as the Service of the Bridegroom. The name of the service is from the figure of the Bridegroom in the parable of the Ten Virgins.

In preparation for Palm Sunday members of the St. Vasilios community come together to fold palm crosses which will be blessed and distributed during the Palm Sunday Divine Liturgy the next day.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, a special service is held. The Cross is placed on a tray surrounded by daffodils and is taken in procession around the church.

On the first Sunday of Great Lent, known as the Sunday of Orthodoxy, at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy a service is conducted in commemoration of the restoration of the use of icons. Orthodox faithful carry icons in a procession, while the clergy offer petitions for the people, civil authorities, and those who have reposed in the faith.
